George Ford suffered last-minute heartbreak after hitting the post with a penalty and then missing a drop goal that would have given England victory over the All Blacks.

But England skipper Jamie George insisted Ford, who had replaced Marcus Smith in the final quarter, should not be blamed after the 24-22 defeat.

George said: 'We are a team that cover a lot of detail and we spoke about being in that exact position. We walked through being in that exact position and we felt like we were in control of it.

'We kept attacking, that's the thing we made sure we focused on and learned a bit from New Zealand in the summer, when we probably stopped attacking a little bit. Unfortunately George didn't make the kick but I tell you what, he hasn't missed many in his career so we certainly can't blame him for that.

'We were in a position to win and whenever you put yourself in a position like that and don't come away with the win, of course you're disappointed.'

England 22-24 New Zealand PLAYER RATINGS: Who 'offered next to nothing' with the ball?

The head coach said: 'To be put in a position where you are winning by the margin the team were at that time, then there's clearly an opportunity to win the game. There were some pretty clear things why we didn't against a very good New Zealand team. We gave them a window to get back and they took it

'You have got to credit them. Ten players from the World Cup final played there, more than a thousand caps. They had more caps in their 15 than we had in our 23, but this England team led by Jamie really played smart rugby.

'Unfortunately, yes, we didn't get the win we wanted but I think everyone can see this team are developing into a very strong team.'

'Ultimately this is the width of the post. That's the reality. It is the width of the post that the result goes one way or the other and that's the nature of Test rugby when you have two good teams. And they were two good teams today.'

New Zealand head coach Scott Robertson admitted: 'I don't think George Ford has ever missed a drop kick in his life, you know. There was probably a bit of emotion in the game.

'We showed a lot of character, stayed in the fight for a long period of time and 15 minutes to go to come from eight down is a pretty special moment for us as a group.'

All Black skipper Scott Barrett added: 'They had every opportunity to win it. Going back to the last series, there have been three tight encounters and they had the opportunities to get their nose in front.'

New Zealand No 8 Ardea Savea said the visitors had 'got lucky with the penalty kick'.

He said: 'But rugby is a game of fine margins and we will take it. That game could've gone either way but for us to stay in it and defend the goal-line like that, I'm very proud of the boys.

'England's pack were bringing line speed and they were putting big shots on us. It went back and forth but we're glad to get the win.'
